Oceans of Love - Sheepski Designs, foiling, coloured pencil

My card today is an inspiration for the Sheepski Designs challenge blog. The theme for February 2019 is All You Need is Love. My card features "Hello", the wonderful mermaid and her friends with Prismacolor pencils and foiling.

Putting It Together

My sweetie got me a laminator. I told him I had been wanting one for a while and sent him a link to a recommended one expecting it to go on a wishlist for maybe later and... he got it! And then I couldn't find most of the foils I've bought at various times, of course. So, I decided I wanted to mix foiling in this month's project for Sheepski Designs. Yes, it is possible to foil on digis even when you only have an inkjet printer :)

Some time ago, I discovered I can emboss with a printed image if I put embossing powder on the ink as soon as it comes off the printer and is still tacky. I used an aqua embossing powder so I could see the contrast with the paper. I figured the aqua would also work with the turquoise-blue foil if it didn't completely foil.

One advantage of using an inkjet print with embossing powder vs a laser print, you can brush away power from the areas you don't want to foil. I used a couple soft brushes to remove the powder from her hair, face, and suit leaving the other lines and details with powder. I also made sure to brush away any errant powder from around the image.

I then heat set the embossing. The laminator will reactivate the embossing, melting the powder to bond with the foil.

I covered the image with the sheet of foil, shiny side up. I also added a heavy cardstock shim under my image.

I ran the image with the foil through the laminator without a sleeve. With fine line detail, that tends to transfer more of the foil. Be careful you don't have any exposed embossing or you could ruin your laminator. If you decide to use a sleeve, find the thinest paper in your stash that doesn't have any sort of wax coating.

Pulling away the foil is like a magicians reveal. Did it work? whew... I had put a small bit of green foil over the seahorses.

I love how the foiling worked on the mermaid and was so disappointed with the seahorses. They just had green spots and all around them. I think the ink on them was just that nudge too dry for the powder.

I used Prismacolor pencils to colour the mermaid and seahorses from another printing. After colouring the mermaid, I looked on Google images for seahorses. The first ones I saw were orange and... ding.. the perfect spot of colour contrast to my mermaid.

Another look at the Prismacolour pencil with the foiling gleaming in the light before I coloured the suit or the seahorses. You can see the green foil dots around the seahorses.. ick.

I fussy cut the mermaid and her friends. Every time I have to do intricate cuts with fussy cutting I silently curse the artist and long for a digital cutter. I still haven't decided which one of the three I really want since I want one to do everything I want. Besides, I need to redo my workshop/studio/craftroom first to have space for one.

I dry fit the mermaid and her friends on an A2 card base to see if they would fit. This is the point I decided between card or decore item.

In my stash, I have Kaisercraft paper from a couple years ago with a mermaid-ish them. I love how this paper looks for the background. I chose a sentiment from my hoarde of Kraftin' Kimmie Stamps.

I used foam mounting tape in little strips and snips to pop up the mermaid and her friends.

I used an Emerald Creek embossing powder for the sentiment and popped everything on a white top-fold card base.

Inside, I used a strip of the scrap from the paper on the front and a sentiment from another Kraftin' Kimmie set.
