Fabulous! - Distress Ink colouring

Summertime is the time when we can be free to bare a bit of skin and Be Fabulous! with no regrets.

This card features a stamp set by Kraftin' Kimmie Stamps, Distress ink watercolouring, embossing, and a patterned paper by Kaisercraft.

These are not affiliate links just the products I use and where you can find them, too (if they're not retired).

Putting It Together

Since this is a relatively simple card, let me show you how I painted the skin with Distress ink.

I use Distress Ink minis that I smush on a plastic work surface. I then pick up the colours with a waterbrush to apply to the image.

For the palette, I used the YNS challenge as inspiration.

I inked up my stamp with light pink ink and stamped on light weight watercolour paper. But... the stamp still had remnants of a blue ink that I used to stamp a mask 'cause I was originally planning to make a scene with another stamp. So.. the stamping came out with this really lovely blue-y grey that was actually even better for the 'no lines' technique.

I always paint an undercolour for skin to give depth to the skin. One of the colours I use for an undercolour is Old Paper, a slightly olive light green. I use it most when I am doing a darker or tanned skin.

I almost always use Victorian Velvet for the initial shadowing on skin. Victorian Velvet is a purply pink.

For a tanned look, I used Tea Dye for the main colour of the skin, going over the entire surface. There is some blending with the colour beneath but, since the undercolour is completely dry when I add on the skin colour, the Tea Dye also does sit somewhat on top of the Old Paper. My brush is also not very wet, barely damp.

I added additional shadowing with Vintage Photo to deepen the tan.

I continued to add shadowing with Victorian Velvet.

I used Tea Dye to deepen the colour and smooth the blending.

For her bathing suit, I did and undercolour of Spun Sugar, shadows of Aged Mahogany, and then the actual colour in Picked Raspberry. Using a brush that's wetter, lift the Picked Raspberry on areas I want a lot lighter, the curves, to expose the lighter undercolour slightly blended with the darker. I did the same on the top of the bag using Twisted Citron and Mowed Grass with Forest Moss in the darkest shadow areas.  For her hair, I used Vintage Photo, with Gathered Twigs and Ground Espresso for the shadowing and Wild Honey for the highlights.

For her bag, I used Antique Linen with shadowing in Wild Honey. The blanket is Milled Lavender and Seedless Preserves which I also used for the flowers on the bag and the butterfly tattoo. I added Gelly Roll metallic purple for the anklet and earring.

And, this is what the palette looks like then I'm done painting. I take notes on the colours I use as I go along.

At this point I decided to use the YNS sketch for the card layout.

I used a stitched rectangle to die cut the image. Then decided I needed a hint of beach and water to ground her. I added those with Scattered Straw and Tumbled Glass. I used an embossing folder to give the value paper background texture and waves. The strip of sea shells was a perfect fit with the addition of a narrow matting of lime green foiled cardstock. I used white embossing on black value paper to make a distinctive front sentiment.

Inside, I used another sentiment and added in a pair of apple green flip flops to match the ones on the front.
