150

On Saturday, Canada is celebrating 150 years since it was united into one country. Canada Day this year is going to be a great big party as everyone marks this milestone.

Almost 5 years ago, my sweetie and I moved to Canada from California. My day job moved us up here to the Vancouver area of British Columbia. Since then we have become permanent residents here, buying a house, and settling in. We love our adopted country and are thrilled to be here celebrating with them.

Happy Birthday, Canada!!

Putting It Together

I've been wanting to make something for Canada Day this year but wasn't coming up with an idea until tonight. When I brought it down stairs to show my sweetie and write up this post, he said "I was wondering when you were going to make something for the 150."

I bought this Sizzix die a bit over a year ago expressly because it's a maple leaf and the leaf is the symbol of Canada. I always have great intentions of doing something to celebrate Canada Day. I chose red holographic paper for a bit of sparkle. Red and white are the colours of the Canadian flag.

I positioned the Simon Says Stamp numbers dies on the leaf...

... for a cut out of the 150.

I covered the front of a chipboard sheet with white gold metallic Neenah cardstock. This card stock is white with just a hint of gold, lovely for a bakground. I then used an edge die to cut the scallop at top and bottom.  The holographic paper is sticker backed, so I simple removed the release paper and adhered it to the plaque. I trimmed off a bit of the very long stem to fit on the plaque.

I die cut 6 ovals from chipboard, white gold metallic, and the red holographic paper.

I adhered the red to one side of each oval...

...and the white to the other.

This gave me 2 sided ovals since I intended them to hand free from the bottom of the plaque. Having them two side means they can flip and still look good.

I die cut the letters in both the red and the white. I adhered the red on the white and dry fit the project together. The ovals do take up more space than the bottom of the plaque if set side by side, but they can hang together a bit and still be legible. I used Spellbinders Art Nuevo letters that my Canadian friend gave me as a gift last Christmas.

For the white letters, I used a Xyron to make them into stickers.

I put the white letters on to the red.

I used a jewelry punch to make the holes since I wanted just a tiny hole.

I also added 6 holes to the bottom of the plaque more or less evenly spaced *laugh*

I used red cord to tie the letters to the plaque (and anchored them on the back with washi tape).  I also added a bit of red cord as a hanger on the top.
