Candle of the Air

This card was created from a digital stamp printed on light waterpaper cardstock and then painted with watercolour pencils while in an airport as I was traveling from one state to another, on vacation visiting family.

Putting It Together

I am on vacation visiting family in two different US states (and I live in Canada). I knew we were going to have captive time in the airport without decent WiFi and not really any space to pull out my oversized wonderful laptop (17" Asus gaming laptop), so I thought about how I could possible do a bit of painting in the dead time. I bought some brush tubes at the dollar store and a large zipped pouch. Into one of the tubes went my pack of Staedtler Karat watercolor pencils I bought a couple decades ago when I lived in Germany (and hadn't much used, oddly) and my water brushes into my liquid baggie for TSA. I printed up a few digis on light water colour cardstock and stamped a few other images, too. I trimmed them so they could fit in a baggie in the zippered bag (which had a few other crafty supplies I thought I might need in the airport).

While we waited, I painted, happy as a clam. That's the most calm I have ever been either waiting or flying. I also got a few compliments from fellow travelers who were, unknown to me, watching me as I was painting. One, also an artist, asked me what I was working on and we had a nice conversation about how I prepared to do painting while in the airport. (I also did a little painting in the airplane, on the long flight, but that wasn't this image.)

We got in to the hotel very late so it wasn't until the next day that I was able to do anything more with this image. I fussy cut the image and added Wink of Stella to the candles to give them some shimmer.

I decided to use the sketch from the Your next Stamp to use as the layout for the card.

I did not bring my Big Shot or any dies, but I did bring two punches with me. One is this lovely scalloped border. I also packed along several papers I thought I might want to use. But, after we got here to the last familial destination, we went to Joanns and I got a few more *laugh* Do we ever have enough paper? The white glitter paper at the bottom was bought today, the mercury gold was brought with me as part of my travel stash.

I also brought a couple foiled panels I had embossed at home when pondering different projects a while back. I used one of those the glorious blue foiled and embossed background for the candles. I forgot to take a picture of just that panel.

To prevent the card getting too thick, the white and mercury gold are adhered directly to the card base

I used the scrap of the scallop punch to add a bit of flair to the inside of the card. I stamped the sentiment in black first...

...then stamped with gold. With the Misti, multi-stamping is easy. The Brilliance gold is a little translucent. The black behind the gold makes the sentiment a lot more readable.

I popped-up both the blue embossed panel and the candles. When I add foam mounting tape to images with odd shapes I always try to support all of the sticky-outie bits. I probably put too much on but I would rather to much than part of the card getting ripped off and destroyed.

If I had brought yellow or cream pearls with me, I would have added them to the centre of the flower. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't have them. I am happy with how the card turned out.
