Putting It Together

Me blathering in the intro 'cause I haven't a clue what to say? check.

For this birthday card, I wanted to use the Distress Ink technique with ink smears, water, and paper smushing. This technique only works with water reactive ink or paint. Warning: This technique is messy (I don't show most of the messy of it).

First smear the colours you want on to a plastic or silicon (non-porous surface). I used the size of my card (seen in front) to show me how close together I needed to place my smears. I have a lovely bigger sheet of rainbow before I thought about this *laugh*

Spray liberally with water. I used water in a Mini Mister that's been spiked with Confetti White Perfect Pearls so the colours would have a shimmer.

Place the watercolour cardstock panel directly on the watery smears. Since I wanted to be sure my smears covered the panel, I used my hand like a brayer going in the same direction as the smears since I didn't want a lot of colour blending beyond the edge of each smear.

Carefully pull the panel off the ink. It will run, it will mess. I used a 110lb watercolour card stock and the amount of water present still warp/curved it. I used a dry paper towel to blot some of the excess drip on the edge and then dried the panel with a heat tool. The ink on the work surface cleans up easy with a wet wipe. You could try to get a second panel from the ink before wiping it up, but the colours have cross contaminated from the panel being lifted off.

I used Tim Holtz's Celebration Words to die cut "Happy Birthday" from the rainbow panel. I also used Elizabeth Craft Designs Stitched Rectangles to cut the rainbow panel and a panel from holographic card stock. I decided to make 2 cards and dry fit the positive and negative space of the die cut. The one on the right is the focus for today.

I adhered the main part of the rainbow panel but still had the rest of the negative space 'things' to put in place.

I fit the cut words into place, without any glue on them, and fit the negative space pieces in. This let me get a near perfect placement.

I coloured up a little unicorn with wings (pegacorn? unipeg?). I used Versamarker to add touches of white sparkle embossing to her horn and wings. Then, I fussy cut the image.

I used Versamark to ink up little wooden stars (part of the Surprise September kit from KKS) and then emboss them with silver. I used tweezers to hold the stars for their treatment.

I stamped the inside of the card but wasn't really happy with it.

So, I made a new panel from the same watercolour cardstock I used on the front. I stamped and coloured it. Adding an interior panel also makes a whimpier card base a lot beefier.

On the front, I had stamped and embossed a castle in the lower left corner. Can't you see it? It's there in Wow White Pearl. Well, if you turn it to the light just right it does show, but not in any of the pictures and.. well.. you have to at the perfect angle to the light to see it. No, this won't do.

I dabbed a bit of Chipped Sapphire over the castle and...

.. ta-da! Castle is visible but still 'misty' both in the pictures and in person.

My notes of colours used. This is how I keep track, a random scrap of paper.

I am very pleased with how it turned out.
