Magical Snowflake - hybrid ink on mineral paper

Putting It Together 

I like experimenting and trying hair-brained ideas that pop into my head. I wondered if it would be possible to use Kraftin' Kimmie hybrid ink like alcohol in on wet mineral paper so I tried it. 

Mineral paper is non-porous and made from ground mineral bonded together with a resin. It has an incredibly smooth texture and an odd weightiness. It can be used with watercolour, alcohol ink, and a variety of other mediums. So why not try it with re-inkers?

I wet the mineral paper first then dripped re-inker, Mermaid Melody and Whimsical Wysteria. Dripping the ink into the spots that were wetter was more successful. The ink floated some in the water and spread similar to alcohol ink. 

I used a blower to move the ink with the water.

 

I added more water, more ink, and more blowing, just like I would with alcohol ink. The hybrid ink and water do move differently.

Once I had the panel looking like I wanted, I left it to dry. Because of other things going on, I left it a couple days. 

Wen I got back to the panel, I noticed there were still some sticky ink areas. It definitely does not dry like alcohol ink *laugh* So, I put a panel of while Hammermill paper over the ink and rubbed. 

The paper picked up the still not dry ink (after 2 days of drying!), but in a really pretty way that I'll use later. 

To make sure the panel was dry, I sprayed it with hairspray as a fixative. However, that, too, dried differently and left speckles of gloss which added a different character, too. 

I was originally planning to die cut a snowflake and add a sentiment from Snowflake Kisses but this die drew my eye. I hadn't used it since I bought it at a car boot sale sponsored by a local scrapbooking store a couple years ago. Looking through my Kimmie stamps, the Christmas Seals had the perfect match. I dry fit my revised idea with silver glitter paper as a matt and for the snowflake ornament.

I stamped and embossed the sentiment on vellum then fussy cut it. I added a glittery enamel dot from the Rainy Day dots to the centre of the snowflake ornament. 

I used the Sparkling Snowflakes stencil to bring the magic inside the card using Mermaid Melody with a bending brush and adding a subtle sparkle with Nuvo Glitter Gloss pen.
