As part of the reward for my recent challenge win for the Outlawz Sunday Song & Rhymes, I was asked to be a guest designer! The sponsor for the challenge is Scribble Designs.
July Morning by Uriah Heep
There I was on a July morning
Looking for love
With the strength
Of a new day dawning
And the beautiful sun
At the sound
Of the first bird singing
I was leaving for home
With the storm
And the night behind me
And a road of my own
With the day came the resolution
I'll be looking for you
La la la la
I created a glimpse of dawn with a Sunny Flower from Scribble Designs (one of the many wonderful freebie stamps) using Koh-i-Noor pencils, MFT stencil, Nuvo embellishment mouse, Distress markers with spritzer tool, Distress Oxide spray, Spellbinders die, and Stampin' Up embossing folder. The inside sentiment is from Unity Stamp Co.
Putting It Together
I got the idea while looking through my stash of Scribble Designs images and thinking about dawn.
After printing the image on Bristol, I used Koh-i-Noor pencils to colour it. I got this set of pencils last year at a car boot sale hosted by local scrapbooking store. They were one of my best purchases ever!
My idea was to have a window with the flower over an ombre dawn.
But, I got to thinking about the properties of Nuvo Embellishment Mousse and how it's like acrylic, water-based but dries water-proof. I taped down a watercolour cardstock panel to a semi-rigid plastic sheet and added a stencil over top. My stencil has gotten a bit warped so I had to tape it on all sides. I didn't want to use repositionable adhesive this time. I recently acquired Coral Calypso and thought it would make the perfect base colour for the dawn.
I then spritzed on Distress marker with the Spritz tool I recently acquired from another car boot sale sponsored by a local scrapbooking store. I had been wanting the spritzer for a long time. Naturally, as soon as I get one and fall in love with it, I find out it's discontinued. I got the spritzer both to use with markers and as a poofer for alcohol ink. I like having more than one use for the tools I get. As a side note, I've also gotten most of my markers from the car boot sales, too. I still need a few to fill out my collection.
After letting the mousse dry, I liberally dampened the panel with a spray bottle before spritzing the colours of Distress marker which let them spatter and blend as they wished. I added light sprays of more water as the panel dried to add in even more colour. There are several places I could have stopped, like at this point, but I layered on several colours holding the spritzer at different angles to get different spray patterns. I also occasionally sprayed a brush tip with water before spritzing it. It really is a cool tool. I wish I had gotten it earlier.
The mousse isn't exactly a resist, but, because it dries waterproof, it doesn't blend with the translucent Distress ink. I lightly sprayed with the more opaque Distress Oxide for a bit of yellow paint splattery.
Removing it from the bonds of tape, I was blown away by how it turned out and wasn't sure I wanted to "hide" any of it. I almost put it into my box of background experiments so I wouldn't have to cut it.
But... I dry fit the oval die and flower on the panel. The flower with the sunrise convinced me though I would need a different size/shape for the oval.
Still reluctant to cut the panel, I die cut the oval from a white panel overlay. I had been planning on an overlay from the start. When I dry fit the flower in the overlay over the sunrise. I knew I had to use it.
I trimmed down two sides of the background to fit under the overlay. Because my cut plates slightly marred my overlay, I decided to use a subtle embossing folder from Stampin' Up to texturize. I used foam mounting tape to raise the overlay over the sunrise and decided just the flower and sunrise make an impactful image. The mousse has a bit of shimmer which catches the light in interesting ways, too.
Inside, I used the two strips I trimmed from the sunrise to frame an appropriate sentiment for an uplifting card. I first stamped lightly with black and then with yellow and coral to soften the look.
