For my project, I used the Cute Whimsical Big Eyed Fairy - Nixie the Pixie. I coloured her with PrismaColor pencils and added her and her mushrooms to a wall hanging with Graphic 45 paper, stenciling, Distress Oxides, chipboard embellishments, and embossing.
As usual, the theme for the Through the Craftroom Door challenge is Anything Goes! Come join us this week for the chance to win 3 digital stamps from Oddball Art!
Putting It Together
Some times a project takes me on a journey far from my original concept. I started out with a card in mind and ended up with a wall hanging.
I started with the idea to make a dimensional card using the Oval border and frame dies from the August 2017 My Monthly Hero to frame Nixie and add in some chipboard mushrooms from Southern Ridge Trading Company. I had also just bought a stencil with rays radiating from a centre and thought that would look great behind her head. The image I had printed fit perfectly in the Oval border frame and with the stencil.
I coloured the pixie using PrismaColor pencils on Canson Bristol paper.
- skin: Clay Rose, Nectar, Deco Peach, Pink Rose, Deco Rose, White
- hair: Dahlia Purple, Parma Violet, Lilac, Lavender, Greyed Lavender
- eyes: Parma Violet, Lilac, Black
- Lips: Crimson Lack, Pink Rose
- dress: Grass Green, Pale Sage, Sap Green Light. White
- wings: Cobalt Turquoise, Muted Turquoise, Sky Blue Light, White, Silver
- bag: Gold
I fussy cut Nixie with Tim Holtz snips leaving a very narrow margin.
I then added White Uniball to her eyes, Wink of Stella to her wings, and Silver Gelly Roll to the edges of her wings over the silver PrismaColor.
In my original idea, I wasn't going to use the mushrooms that are part of the digi with Nixie but I changed my mind and coloured them with PrismaColor pencils, too. They're such funkalicious mushrooms, how could I resist.
- mushrooms: Chestnut, Clay Rose, Beige Sienna, Seashell Pink, Eggshell, White, Dark Brown, Terra Cotta, Black Raspberry, Sienna Brown, Raspberry, Nectar
- butterfly: Pumpkin Orange, Mineral Orange, Goldenrod, Jasmine, Cream, Black, Indigo Blue
I remembered I had a Graphic 45 paper in my stash which I had gotten with this image in mind, Tiny Toadstools from the Fairy Dust collection. I dry fit Nixie, the die frame and the mushrooms.. and a bigger idea started blooming in my mind.
I recently got a 3-piece panel from Kaisercraft and decided one of them would work well to make this project into a decor item. I dry fit everything and added the stencil I thought would be cool for rays coming from Nixie or rather behind her. This might look like a messy pile, but this is how I build ideas, picturing it in my head.
I decided to make a background for the golden rays I wanted with the stencil. I used Distress Oxides: Worn Lipstick, Salty Ocean, Broken China, and Wilted Violet. I misted the panel with Perfect Pearls Turquoise mixed with water for a bit of shimmer.
I used my new Prima Marketing Finnabair silicone brush to apply transparent gloss exture paste through a My Favorite Things stencil I just got, Radiating Rays.
While the texture paste was still wet, I poured Elizabeth Craft Designs silk microfine glitter, Solar Gold, over it. After it dried, I used a fluffy dollar store makeup brush to brush away any remaining excess.
The finished background and the supplies used for it.
To cut my cardstock for the frame, I traced it with pencil. I traced on the back of the Graphic 45 paper so any pencil marks would not be visible on the front. I really wish I had gotten more sheets of this paper, it's so pretty on both sides.
I painted the frame with Distress paint, Peeled Paint, so any edge showing would blend in.
I die cut the Oval border frame from olive cardstock from Simply Defined and used the oval to cut the base paper. I dry fit for my progress.
I decided I still did want the chipboard mushrooms and used VersaMark and Mardi Gras embossing powder from Emerald Creek to embellish them.
I dry fit one last time.
I added black fun foam and Scortape to the back of the mushroom background.
I added foam mounting tape to the back of the Oval border frame.
I adhered the radiating rays background and mushroom background to the back of the frame using the front of the frame as a guide for placement.
I used foam mounting tape on Nixie as well.
I put everything in place, using a combination of foam mounting tape and double-sided tape to adhere all the pieces. I added four Doodlebug Jewels, BonBon, to the four corners and Glitterazzi nail jewels as pixie dust. I also stamped a sentiment from Kraftin' Kimmie Stamps, Neverland Sentiments (retired), on the other side of the Tiny Toadstools paper, embossed it with Cloud 9 from Wow!. I stamped the sentiment with Ranger archival black and VersaMark because Cloud 9 is translucent shimmery. I die cut the sentiment with a Spellbinders label die.
The project is very shimmery and mushroomy for the pretty Nixie and her pixie dust.
