Supplies
These are not affiliate links just the products I use and where you can find them, too (if they're not retired).
This card starts with a challenge. It's the first time I'm entering the Newton's Nook challenge which requires using one of their images. They have some digital stamp freebies on their blog, but I got an adorable stamp set in a recent Simon Says Stamp sale and decided to use it. Besides, you can't ever have too many birthday cards, right?
The current challenge is a sketch. I looked at it a while and got an idea.
I first used the blender tool to add three Distress Oxide inks (Wilted Violet, Broken China, and Worn Lipstick) to a panel of Elizabeth Craft Designs soft finished white cardstock. I love this cardstock for blending. It has a subtle pebbly texture that gives the blending a vibrancy. I used removable adhesive to anchor the panel to my work surface and a bit of scrap paper to hold the panel and avoid finger spots.
I used a mister with Confetti White Perfect Pearls mixed with water to lightly spray down the panel and create some water spots and 'activate' the Oxide.
I used a heat tool to completely dry the panel.
I then used a stencil to add Antique Linen Distress Oxide 'cause my package from Simon Says Stamp with it had just arrived! (I also got Black Soot in this order. I want all the Oxides but budget says I have to buy them slowly *whimper*) I used a strip of washi tape on one side of the stencil to both anchor it and to act as a hinge. I can lift up the stencil to see if I'm getting good coverage without it getting moved.
After stenciling, I sprayed with Gold Perfect Pearls in water and heat set again. I love the visual texture the stenciling gives to the panel.
Before moving on, I black embossed the cute Newton's Nook image and lightly coloured it with Distress ink (Tea Dye, Wilted Violet, Salty Ocean, Tumbled Glass, and Weathered Wood). I then stamped the sentiment in dark blue. I forgot the candle flame and a 'ground' until a few hours later when it woke me up at 2am *laugh* I used a pierced square die to trim the image, since I wanted it to be a little rectangular and my rectangle die set wasn't the right dimension, I matched up holes in the piercing and ran it through the Big Shot a second time.
I did the same double cut on the background strips using another of the square dies with piercing. I made three panel strips from the panel I made earlier. I dry fit the card and was thrilled.
To place the three background panels, I started with the outer two.
I then added the third between them to have even inside margins. It's not easy to see the shimmer of the Perfect Pearls in the pictures, but background is really shimmery.
I tied the cord around the image panel before adding the foam mounting tape. The bow is a 'cheat'. The cord is tied around and then the bow is tied around the cord. The foam tape helps keep the cord tight and in place. I put an extra blop of the foam tape in the middle so the image panel is supported even if it gets mailed.
All the inks and colouring agents used for the card.
My Broken China and Worn Lipstick Oxides are from re-inkers in Stampin' Up Ink Spots. My friend has the re-inkers and shared them with me. I still have the full pads of those two on my wish list. For the Oxides, I really do like the full pad. I have minis for all of the original Distress.
For the inside of the card, to give it a bit of pizzazz, I stamped the hat from the kit with three of the Oxides of the background.
